PCBMod*™
Total PCB EMC Simulator package utilizing both PEEC and BEM
athos™
Pre-Processor Graphical Viewer and Layout Editor

High demands are made on planning and analyzing layout geometries and the verification of circuit functionality in industrial development and manufacture of printed circuit boards. Especially for the layout designer in the analog field the use of PCBMod offers an efficient enrichment in the design flow, because here an exact and quick examination of the circuit layout is made difficult by arbitrarily shaped copper areas arranged on the board. By integrating PCBMod into common PCB frameworks it is possible to fit in easily into an existing design environment.

PCBMod provides you with a complete and efficient program package for layout planning and layout analysis of printed circuit board designs. Additionally PCBMod fits easily into your familiar design flow. Its distinguishing features are the automatic extraction of arbitrarily shaped copper structures on the board while at the same time it can be directly included into common PCB design environments. PCBMod includes two- and three-dimensional field solvers which enable you to make exact statements about the quality of layout structures of your board design.

The program concept realized in PCBMod takes into consideration the special demands a circuit designer has on a software tool used in industrial development of printed circuit boards:

  • multiple possibilities of usage in all phases of layout generation
  • interfaces to several PCB-frameworks
  • simple integration into your familiar design flow
  • exact and quick methods of calculation
  • flexible configurability
  • comfortable user interface

For the automatic data input we offer interfaces to the Mentor Graphics Board Station and to Zuken-Redacs VISULA and CADSTAR (in development). The output files generated by individual program sections make possible a complete simulation of the examined structures as well as their graphical representation. The Spice-compatible analog simulator included in the users design environment is used for the signal analysis. Here special functions and models of Eldo and Saber (in development) are supported. A fundamentally new development is the consideration of arbitrarily shaped copper areas in the layout extraction.

Not only continuous groundplanes but also an unlimited number of partial ground planes (area fills) which are widly spread in analog circuits are considered in the calculations. This special ability makes PCBMod outstanding in the following fields of use:

  • detailed analysis of analog PCB layouts
  • generation of a ground concept of a circuit
  • guarantee of signal integrity

Program flow phases of PCBMod in automatic extraction:

Selection: The user selects the layout structures that one plans to analyze within the PCB design environment. This simplifies the selection of arbitrary lines, area fills, pins, vias and ground planes by mouse-click.

Layout analysis: Collection of the selected structures, consideration of printed circuit board technology, reading in of user specific parameters.

Extraction: Analysis of layout geometries, inclusion of neighbouring unselected elements with adjustable detection threshold, building up of a logical connecting structure between the extracted elements, data processing depending on the selected way of extraction.

Modelling, calculation: Activation of the according two- and three-dimensional field solvers, preservation of the logical net nodes assignments.

Data output: Generation of simulation models (Spice substitute circuits) including intermediate nodes, several ways of matrix representation, graphic output.

PCBMod includes a large number of predefined modelling and calculation possibilities for the configuration of the automatic layout extraction:

  • line capacitances and inductances
  • wave impedances
  • line discontinuities
  • capacitances and inductances of arbitrary 3D structures
  • current distributions

The user is supplied with extensive possibilities for manual generation of structures to be modelled and calculated.
